I don’t typically dislike heights but I did not like this. It was the emergency stair for a new renovation project.

4 floors up.

It was a bit shakey and the rail seemed really low

I don’t mind heights so much, but those grate floors/stairs sort of freak me out when you look literally directly below you and realise you’re 40+ feet up, without really much at all under you.

For some reason, I’m okay with “natural” heights. I can stand on a mountain, or even close to the edge of a canyon. But a building will sketch me out every time. Part of me secretly distrusts manmade construction. However, I have zero problems with planes, which is ironic. I think something about being tethered to the ground is scarier than being free from it. Or maybe it's just because I've been flying in planes since I was 6 weeks old.

I seem to remember something from Abnormal Psych class in college where it was proven that people's fear of heights was directly proportional to their subconscious suicidal thoughts. It was supposed to be some kind of defense mechanism to make you fear what you secretly might do.
